Students For Life Praises New Pro-Life State Department Policy, Expansion of Mexico City Policy
“Taxpayer dollars should not be going to subsidize abortions, here or internationally. The Trump Administration should be commended for enforcing our policy against subsidizing abortions with taxpayer dollars” notes Kristan Hawkins, president of Students for Life of America.
WASHINGTON, D.C. (3-26-19)–
Reacting to news that the State Department will be closing loopholes in the Mexico City policy and ensuring that sub-contractors do not commit abortions and receive taxpayer dollars, Kristan Hawkins, president of Students for Life of America, and an attendee at that State Department announcement, praised the news.
“The Trump administration has been the most pro-life administration in history, and Secretary Pompeo and President Trump should be thanked for closing the loopholes that allowed NGOs to take our taxpayer dollars and give them to sub-contractors that commit or promote abortions. This is an 80-20 issue, and the American people have made it clear they do not want their taxpayer dollars subsidizing abortions. This step will start to rectify the mistakes we made in enshrining abortion into Kenya’s constitution, a grave mistake made by the Obama administration. ”
“In response to the abortion lobby calling this a “global gag rule” The U.S. taxpayer should not be compelled to pay for the sales pitch for abortion or subsidize the highly profitable business. Nothing prevents Big Abortion from marketing themselves internationally, but the U.S. government should not make hawking the end of life a goal of our engagement with other nations. Life-affirming policy rightfully excludes abortion. ”
According to the announcement, NGOs will have to provide certification to the State Department that they are not involve with abortions. This policy will close the 90 to 95% of the loopholes that allowed NGOs to skirt the Mexico City Policy’s prohibitions on taxpayer-funding of abortions through foreign aid dollars.
Students for Life of America has been active internationally, including traveling to Ireland to fight against the country’s effort to repeal pro-life laws in 2018, and traveling to Australia just a few weeks ago to work with Australian pro-lifers on education and outreach.
