Four Craziest Free-Speech Issues This School Year

As we wrap up the 2017-2018 school year, it’s time to look back at some of the strangest and craziest encounters of the school year. Sometimes you think, ‘there’s probably no way an ANTIFA protester will call a female speaker anti-woman, right?’ or ‘campus police know that erasing chalking isn’t a free-speech right, right?’. Then, you read the stories below and start to question everything you ever thought was true.

Luckily, Students for Life has an ally in the White House. The most rewarding experience for SFLA this year has been the invitation of VP Mike Pence and Karen Pence to come to the White House the night before the 2018 National Pro-Life March and discuss free-speech and being pro-life on high school and college campuses

1. George Mason Police Say Erasing Chalking is Free-Speech

At the beginning of the school year, Students for Life chalked messages of hope and love outside a NARAL conference on campus. The attendees were incredibly upset at this, and started to destroy our chalking. When campus police were called, the police officer explained, inaccurately, that destroying chalking is actually part of the First Amendment.

Relive the whole story below:

2. Student Argues for Infanticide

This one really needs little background, but here we go: A student in Kentucky argued that infanticide is justified because we don’t know if the toddler is sentient or not, and then argued that trees are similar to newborn babies. Peter Singer, Jr. used this to justify his support for killing two-year old babies.

3. Purity Thomas Punched Outside of Planned Parenthood

In early December, Purity Thomas, and three members of Liberty University Students for Life were peacefully sidewalk counseling outside of the Roanoke Planned Parenthood. These students gather weekly outside of the Planned Parenthood on Saturdays, the day this location commits abortions, praying for women who enter the building and offering resources and support for other options besides abortion.

At approximately 8:30 AM, today, Saturday, December 2nd, a woman confronted our Students for Life leaders and began threatening them, saying she would beat them up and “fuck them up.”

The woman first stole a sign that said “All people are made in the image of God” from one of our student leaders. She started walking away, but then returned, and tried to take another sign, before punching 15 year-old high school Students for Life leader, Purity Thomas, across the face, causing her to stumble and fall to the ground.

4. ANTIFA Protestors Call Kristan Hawkins ‘Anti-Woman’

In April, Kristan had several speaking stops lined up in Southern California. ANTIFA protested Kristan, calling her “anti-woman” and a “fascist.” Check out some of the footage we captured, below:
