With news that Toys R Us is closing, now is a great time to stock up on baby supplies and toys to donate to local maternity homes or pregnancy resource centers. One Students for Life leader, Bryan Istenes, shared this example.
“The closing of Toys R Us signals an end of an era, that many of us frequented as children with our parents. With this closing though, comes a massive opportunity for the Pro-Life Generation to step up and make a positive impact in our local communities. How often do we hear, “oh you don’t care about the life of the baby after it’s born.” Well, now is the time to show the country that we do support babies after they are born! We can do so, by going to Toys R Us and buying whatever baby supplies are most needed for our local pregnancy resource center(s).Buying these supplies is considered supportive services under the five pillars of Students For Life of America.”
He added, “I myself am no stranger to buying supplies for the Cleveland Pregnancy Center. Last semester when we did sidewalk chalking it got a bad reaction on campus and someone started a fundraiser to donate to Planned Parenthood, that ultimately got $205 in donations. We decided to respond to that by matching their $205 with $205 worth of baby supplies to the Cleveland Pregnancy Center. They were so appreciative of our generosity, they used our story of giving them the supplies in their newsletter. Once their newsletter went out, they received 4 more matching donations of $205 each. We turned our negative situation into a positive one for the CPC by raising over $1,000 for them.”
According to Toys R Us, there are around 735 stores across the United States, meaning there is likely one near you. Now would be a great time to stock up on supplies to donate to those in need. You can also use this opportunity to buy new supplies for your group, such as posters, markers, and other art supplies you can use to create displays for tabling or promoting your group.
When is the best time to go? The sales started last Friday, according to CNN Money. Marketwatch provides several great tips for getting the best deals. One that you may not have thought of is looking to other retailers, such as Amazon and WalMart, who may run similar deals in order to win over consumers who will be leaving Toys R Us and looking for a new store to buy toys from.
