Norwin High School Knights for Life, Pennsylvania
What an amazing year it’s been for Pro-Life Student groups across the country! One of my favorite things to see is when a new budding group with bright-eyed energetic leaders hit the ground running. That is exactly how the brave young students at Norwin High School started their year. I was contacted early Fall Semester by Katy, a sophomore and aspiring group president, saying she wanted to get a Students for Life Group started right away.
The process of starting a club at the high school level, especially in a public school, can take a long time. That didn’t deter Katy from spreading the word and finding interested friends to sit down and start planning what the group would look like. I was able to meet them for coffee and help develop a mission for the group. Soon after, she found a very supportive faculty member to sponsor the group and realized there were lots of other supportive staff members at her school!
Finally the club was approved, and when word got out, people noticed. In February the group posted a bulletin board display of hearts representing how many lives were lost to abortion that day. Students from the pro-life group also chose to wear a heart pinned to their shirt in support. That sparked quite a debate! Dozens of students were exposed to the harsh reality of abortion and were finally talking about what it meant to them. Some students claiming to support abortion were so intolerant of the pro-life display that they took to social media making fun of Katy and the group, saying the pro-life club shouldn’t express their opinion at all. They made their own pro-choice advertisements to wear on their shirts and mocked the pro-life club throughout the day. Some parents even got involved and called the school to complain! Thankfully, administration stayed strong and backed the Knights for Life Group’s right to free speech.
None of this stopped Katy and her friends. We got on a call together right away to discuss Embracing the Controversy of Abortion and move forward planning the next events. Just this month they went out into their community to host an information/activity table at the regional Special Olympics, which was hosted by their district. They raised awareness for a local Pregnancy Resource Center and collected over 1,600 diapers and 25 containers of wipes!
With focused determination and a passion to leave this world a lot better than they found it, the Knights for Life Group at Norwin High School is truly making a difference and is this month’s High School Group of the Month! Way to go, Knights!
